Hello and welcome to my stop on the Tiger's Dream Cosplay Tour!  Today I have a review of Tiger's Dream for you and don't forget to enter the giveaway at the end of the post!  Thanks so much for stopping by!

A tiger left behind.
A goddess in need of an ally.
Stranded in a time and place he never wished for, Kishan Rajaram must carry out his destiny of assisting the beautiful yet extremely irritable goddess Durga. This daunting task is not made easy by the fact that he must also face the truth about the girl he loves and the brother who stole her away.
When the wily shaman Phet appears and tells Kishan that Kelsey needs him, he jumps at the chance to see her again. In his efforts to save her, Kishan discovers that the curse he thought was over is just beginning. As time unravels around him, Kishan realizes that the fates of all those he holds dear lie in hands.
The goddess’s power hangs in the balance. Kishan has no choice but to sacrifice the unthinkable to fight the dark forces swirling around the woman he’s charged to protect. As he does, he discovers that love and loyalty create their own magic and accepts that he must decide his destiny once and for all.
Tiger’s Dream is the conclusion to the epic Tiger’s Curse fantasy romance series that left you breathless.
My Review:

Well, it's been a long and emotional ride with this series.  I first started with Tiger's Curse in 2013 and now here we are 5 long years later.  This book was a long read but it was so worth it.  I felt like Colleen could have ended it where she did in Tiger's Destiny (the ending was enough tears and emotions, for sure) but this book just tied everything together and brought it all to a perfect (and super emotional) conclusion.  I know Ren is the hero and the more classic princely character but I felt that all along that Kishan was more... real?  More relatable maybe?  I don't know.  Ren is a lovely character but I felt gutted at the end of Tiger's Destiny for Kishan.  The letter at the end of Destiny helped lessen the blow but I still worried for Kishan.  Tiger's Dream both made me feel better and worse!  I don't want to spoil anything but this is an epic conclusion to this series!!

The Broken Pride (Bravelands #1) by Erin Hunter

Toay's review is brought to you by QuailMan, my 10 year old son.  Enjoy!

Today I will be reviewing Bravelands: The Broken Pride by Erin Hunter.  Here is the Goodreads blurb:

Heed the call of the wild with this brand-new, action-packed animal fantasy series from the #1 nationally bestselling author of Warriors. Enter the Bravelands…and discover the Erin Hunter series you’ve been waiting for.

A lion cast out from his tribe.

An elephant who can read the bones of the dead.

A baboon rebelling against his destiny.

For generations, the animals of the African plains have followed a single rule: only kill to survive. But when an unthinkable act of betrayal shatters the peace, the fragile balance between predators and prey will rest in the paws of three unlikely heroes.

Set in an epic new world and told from three different animals’ points of view, Bravelands will thrill readers who love Spirit Animals and Wings of Fire, as well as the legion of dedicated fans who’ve made Erin Hunter a bestselling phenomenon.
I was super excited when I first read the new book from the Erin Hunters.  I read the book in about 2 weeks. It was so good and it was hard stop reading.  I can't choose a favorite character because all three story arcs presented in the book captured my attention.  The story was very interesting so  I suggest that you read Bravelands!

You can find The Bravelands Series on Goodreads. Erin Hunter and their books can be found on their website. I give The Broken Pride 5 Fairies for a great book with interesting characters.

Mez's Magic (The Lost Rainforest Book 1) by Eliot Schrefer

For our first review of the new year, I am proud to present my new blogging assistant in charge of middle grades reviews: my 10 year old son, Ian.  Ian loves to read and he is super excited to share his love for his new favorite book!  So, without further ado, here's Ian with his first published review!

Goodreads Blurb:
The Lion King meets Wings of Fire in the magical rainforest kingdom of Caldera in this new middle grade animal fantasy series from New York Times bestselling author and National Book Award finalist Eliot Schrefer.

Caldera has forever been divided into those animals who walk by night and those who walk by day. Nightwalker panthers, like young Mez and her beloved sister, have always feared daywalkers as creatures of myth and legend. Until the eclipse.

Now Mez has discovered that she can cross the Veil and enter the daylight world. Her magical power has unknown depths, but she must rush to discover it after a mysterious stranger arrives at her family’s den, bearing warnings of a reawakened evil.

Saving Caldera means Mez must leave her sister behind and unite an unlikely group of animal friends to unravel an ancient mystery and protect their rainforest home.

So for most of the book there is a light hearted feeling but it turns darker closer to the end but then it is happy at the end for the most part the whole book is shrouded in mystery. The characters are funny, smart, and quirky. The main characters are cool too Mez, the calico who doesn't know she has magic but trust me she does, Lima the happy bat, she is super happy all of the time except except when she is not, then there is the frog Rumi, the smart and nerdy frog has always does boring stuff but it pays off in the end ,then there is this monkey guy who is funny he is the comic relief. The best part is all of it!!!I am excited for the next one because of  the ending!!!!!!!

I give Mez's Magic 5 Fairies for a great read that he just could not put down!  You can find Eliot Schrefer on his website and you can add The Lost Rainforest: Mez's Magic on Goodreads.

Come on Down to Rainbow Con!

Hey, everyone, and welcome to Amethyst Daydreams, which has been temporarily taken over by the peeps at RainbowCon! As the post title suggests, we're here to tell you a little about RainbowCon and where you can find more information. Ready, set, GO!

The Rainbow Conference (aka RainbowCon) is a four-day GLBTQ multimedia conference taking place in Tampa, Florida July 16th through 19th, 2015. Our motto is to celebrate artistic diversity, and we welcome anyone who enjoys GLBTQ content in media from books to movies and beyond. Our first con was in April 2014, and after such a resounding success, we can't wait to get the party started at 2015's event, which is coming up in just another month!

RainbowCon started up in 2013 when three writers/readers of GLBTQ fiction saw an opportunity to fill the void of conventions focusing on GLBTQ content. I can't tell you how many times my co-author (S.L. Armstrong), her husband (Roger), and I have attended conventions and thought, "Aw, man! This is great 'n' all, but there's only one panel about non-het stuff!" It's incredibly common for mainstream conventions to only have one or two panels about slash fiction or perhaps gay fiction, if they have any content like that at all. What's even more depressing is how that content is usually automatically deemed "ADULTS ONLY" and shoved into a late-night slot like the proverbial ugly redheaded stepchild. But, as far as we're concerned, that ugly redheaded stepchild deserves some love, too!

Thankfully, there are exceptions to the rules like Yaoi-Con (part of Anime North up in Toronto, Canada) and smaller events like OutlantaCon, which take pride in being "those people... over there... in that room" (read: outcasts), and we salute them! Their all-inclusive approach to honoring GLBTQ themes in anime/manga and comics/games, respectively, is exactly the kind of thing that inspired us to step up and create our own con.

RainbowCon began as a GLBTQ convention centering specifically around fiction, both for readers and writers, but as we move into our second year, we've expanded our programming to be more inclusive. We're happy to announce that we're embracing all the arts. While there's still a strong core of panels and workshops available for fans of GLBTQ fiction, we've also added content for GLBTQ topics and characters in television, movies, web-comics, theatre, and fandom. There's something for everyone at RainbowCon, and we want everyone who attends to have an amazing time!

Our Guests of Honor this upcoming year are Alex Woolfson and Adam DeKraker, the writer and illustrator for The Young Protectors web-comic, which you can find online HERE (teaser below). Adam made that custom logo up above for us, and we couldn't be more thrilled to have both of them coming down to Tampa! We also have over 50 authors of GLBTQ fiction signed up to attend, so there are lots of opportunities to find others in our fiction community there! We'll have four days of amazing content, from panels to workshops to a masquerade ball and a field trip to our official charity, the Tampa Bay Big Cat Rescue.

Interested in RainbowCon? Check out our guests, attending authors, and panel content on our website and 'like' our Facebook Page or follow us on Twitter (@RainbowCon_2015) to stay up to date with out event over the coming months. Just remember, RainbowCon is for anyone and everyone, and we'd love for you to 'Walk on the Wild Side' with us in Tampa next month! There's no registration cap, so come on down!

Excerpt

“What is your problem?”
“What isn’t my problem?” he asked, throwing his hands wide, the hammer still gripped tightly in one of his fists. His chest was bare, a golden beam from the work light throwing the muscles on his torso into sharp relief, highlighting the beads of sweat on his skin that were trailing down through the ridges of his abs.
It was difficult to have a fight with somebody when you were lightheaded from looking at them.
“Things are moving. They’re moving faster than I want. Moving on, and I’m not ready,” he said, dropping his arms to his sides. “This barn is getting built, whether I’m ready for it to be built or not. I’m starting to want sex again, even though I don’t really want it.”
Liss blinked, her heart stuttering as she absorbed his words. “Wait, what?”
“And you,” he said, taking a few steps toward her, “you are not helping.”
“What again?” she asked, blinking rapidly, her heart pounding so hard she was afraid she might pass out. Just faint dead away, onto the floor of the partially built barn.
“You,” he said, his voice rough, “and your lacy panties. I saw them in the laundry. And now I can’t stop picturing you in them.”
Her stomach twisted into a knot, her heart thundering against her breastbone. “You thought about me in my panties?”
“I can’t stop thinking about you in them.”
“Well, I saw you in…Your underwear. You didn’t see me in mine.”
“You seem fine. I am not fine.” He dropped the hammer with a dull thud and took another step toward her, wrapping his arm around her waist and drawing her up against his chest. “I’m not fine.” He raised his hand, brushing her cheekbone with his thumb. “I’m just not.”
She could hear the pain in his voice, the confusion, the plea. He wanted her to fix this, wanted her to make it better, to take away the anguish that was tearing at him from the inside out. But she couldn’t.
She didn’t want him to stop picturing her that way. Because she didn’t want him to let her go. As far as this was concerned, she didn’t want it to be okay. She wanted to be different. She wanted to be everything.
He needed her help, and she wanted something else entirely.
She hated herself for that weakness, but she couldn’t fight it. And she didn’t move away from him.
“I’m not fine, either,” she said, her voice small.
For a moment he just looked at her, his chest rising and falling with each breath, his eyes glittering. Then he moved.
“Fuck,” he said, just before his mouth covered hers.
Liss was glad that he was holding on to her, because if he hadn’t been, she would’ve crumpled straight to the ground. Years of fantasies could not have prepared her for the reality of Connor’s lips on hers. It was new, and it was familiar in the most beautiful way. Like Christmas. Different all the time and somehow the same. With surprises and tradition all wrapped into one. That was kissing Connor. His scent surrounding her, so familiar, but mingling together now with his flavor. She had never tasted him before, and it was the most wonderful thing. The most perfect thing.
He angled his head, sliding his tongue across the seam of her mouth as she opened to him, sighing as his tongue moved against hers. She wrapped her arms around his neck, pressed herself hard up against him and kissed him back with all of the repressed enthusiasm that had been building inside of her since she’d first imagined what it might be like to taste his lips.
He was everything. The sunset on the ocean, the salt breeze through the pine trees, a burst of the season’s first ripe blackberry on her tongue. He tasted like heartbreak and hope, and it made her ache down so deep it was physical pain.
He shifted their positions and cupped her face, the kiss intensifying. His mouth was firm, his beard rasping against her skin, his tongue slick against hers. The depth to the kiss, the intensity of it…it couldn’t be anyone but him.
She’d spent years studying his lips, and now she finally knew what it felt like to have them beneath hers. She’d talked to him, but she’d never heard him groan like he did as she swept her tongue across his bottom lip. She knew him, as well as a friend could ever know another friend, and yet, she hadn’t known what he had sounded like when he was aroused. But she did now. And it was better than anything. Better than ice cream.
When he pulled away from her, she was shaking, a strange, sick feeling in the pit of her stomach. Terror mingling with desire, excitement, adrenaline.
She didn’t know what to say; she didn’t know what to do. She wanted to lean in and kiss him again, and she wanted to run away. She couldn’t really do both at the same time. Unless she kissed him really quickly and then ran for the hills.
There was no question that she had just revealed a hell of a lot. Because you didn’t kiss a guy like that if you hadn’t thought about it before. If you hadn’t thought about it for years and years, over and over again.
But he had kissed her back. And even though he was looking at her now like she had sprouted a second head, the fact remained he had instigated this.
And he had thought about her in her panties.
She didn’t want to speak, because that would mean the moment was over. And it was a moment she had spent so many years waiting for, she didn’t think she could face the end of it.
But she did have to deal with the fact that this could very well be the end of the moment. Because he wasn’t moving toward her again. Didn’t look like he was leaning in for another kiss. Didn’t look like he would extend his hands to her, and lead her to his bedroom.
A shiver ran through her body. She wanted to go to his bedroom. She just let the thought sit there, fully formed, acknowledged. She wanted to go to Connor’s bedroom. She wanted more of what had just happened. She wanted him naked, wanted to touch him everywhere, taste him everywhere. Once would never be enough. One touch of his mouth against hers was nothing more than a glimpse at paradise.
How could she go back now that she’d experienced this? Connor was fantasy made flesh. And now that she knew desire like this was real and living, how could she ever go back to what she’d accepted before?
This was heat and fire, the kind that left scorched earth and devastation in its wake. The kind that reshaped everything it touched.
Too soon it was over.
“Sorry,” he said, taking a step away from her.
It was over. That step backward made it official. She hated it. Hated that she was only going to kiss Connor once. She had spent a very long time accepting the fact that she was never going to kiss him at all. But this was worse.
“Don’t apologize,” she said. “It sucks.”

Friction Tour!

Romeo and Juliet had it easier. They came from warring families who clearly drew a line for them not to cross. It wasn’t the same with Easton and Georgia. They came from a town where family was precious and moments were cherished. Still, there were unspoken rules, such as not falling for your best friends kid sister—or testing troubled hearts.
The losses Easton and Georgia endured at a young age tossed them down separate paths, far from the sleepy town they both had roots within.
Now, broken roads and bad decisions were the demons in their pasts—choices that would either draw them together, or rip them apart when chance landed them face to face once more.

“I tend to attract the broken.”
“I’m not broken,” Easton snapped in a hiss of words.
She felt her body tense before her next bold words came. “Did I say you were?” She lifted her chin. “Am I attracting you, Easton Ballantine?”
He looked right at her, green to blue, a stare reaching past the fraudulent calm surface. Yes, she was. Which only pissed him off more. Not only was she not anywhere near his type, she was Memphis’s kid sister, Lucas’s daughter—she was seventeen. No way in hell this is going down.
He smirked to break the gaze they shared, to put a wall between her and him—to do anything to block the way she was messing with his head.
“I’m every kind of bad habit you don’t want or need, Georgia.”

Impulsion Is On Sale of 99¢!

With a glance Wyatt Doran stole Harley Tatum’s heart. With each summer that passed, touch by touch, they robbed each other’s innocence, birthing a love that was so deep that it scorched within. Without warning, they were ripped from the clutches of each other, placed in lives that were worlds apart. Only to cross paths after a freak accident where Harley’s horse rig was flipped. An accident that Wyatt Doran, from fire station 32, responded.
The tension was immediate, the emotions were raw. One breath told them they were not the same as before, one touch….changed their world.

But can she trust the man who she's been fighting against her whole life, or will she end up another piece in his deadly game of cat and mouse with the people who betrayed her so long ago?

My Review

I am going to review these two books together because they feel very much like opposite sides of the same coin.  I loved getting to see both stories.  I love that we get a male and female perspective as well as views from each of the opposing factions.  I loved the first book in the Lost Imperials series and I loved these two as well. Riven and Prodigal are action packed adventures that have a steampunk feel and a time travel theme that feels like an episode of Dr. Who at times. The characters are all well written and engaging. I highly recommend this series to all readers young and old.

Bio:
Tyler H. Jolley is a sci-fi/fantasy author and full-time orthodontist, periodontist (see: Overachiever). He divides his spare time between writing, reading, mountain biking, and camping with his family.
Sherry D. Ficklin is a full-time writer and internet radio show host with more mouth then good sense. She has a serious book addiction, but continually refuses treatment, much to her husband’s chagrin.
Tyler and Sherry met one fateful day and bonded over their love for books, science fiction, and donuts. Their first co-written novel came shortly after. Now, they still do all those other things, but also go to various steampunk conventions and events under the guise of ‘research’. They can often be found lurking on the Lost Imperials Facebook page or over on the official website, www.thelostimperials.com.

Zombie-Sourus Rex Blog Tour!

zombie

About Zombie-saurus Rex:

Zombie-saurus RexRex Morton, a seventeen year-old zombie, has arrived in the small farming town of Plain View, Nebraska; just another stop in a long string of small towns left behind in their rear view mirror. Unlike the zombie stereotype, Rex is bright and friendly - as long as he doesn't get hungry. He hopes this time he can manage to stick around long enough to get his diploma.

Rex’s fiercely protective mother has strong armed yet another school district into accepting her son by threatening a discrimination lawsuit. At Plain View High, a dismal pattern of fear, prejudice, and bullying steers Rex down a familiar path toward expulsion. The difference this time is that Rex has fallen for fiery Goth girl, Ariella Klopenstein, the daughter of the Police Chief, and decided he will make his stand in Plain View.
As the Z-virus spreads west and the country panics, Rex and Ariella must find a way to overcome Rex’s mother who wants to break them apart and flee town, a school principal who wants Rex expelled, Ariella’s father, the Police Chief, who thinks Rex is dangerous, and a government zombie round-up aimed at solving the zombie problem once and for all.
Zombie-saurus Rex is a story about perseverance, overcoming prejudice, stereotypes and adversity. What it isn’t is a story about dinosaurs. The title is inspired by a nickname a school bully hangs on Rex due to his size, posture, and slow plodding gate.

Excerpt

Bouncing from school district to school district had advantages and disadvantages. Rex
often found himself hopelessly behind in some subjects if the curriculum at his previous school
was wonting. In the case of Ms. Remington’s English class, he’d already read most of the books
listed, either on his own or for assignments at other schools. Academically, English was going to
be a breeze. But then again, academics were never the problem.
Students around him looked frightened and confused. Rex copied the reading list slowly,
careful not to do anything threatening. Even after copying the titles, Rex kept his head down and
pretended to still be writing to occupy time.
Once, just once, he’d like to rise from his chair baring his teeth and growling, and advance
on the class stiff legged to watch them cower and run. Just once he wanted to trade places, to
make them know what it was like to be powerless, to be victimized. His mother always warned,
mind your manners, son. Dogs that bite get shot.
A girl in the next row watched him, a sly grin on her lips. She was small, both short and
slim, dressed all in black. She had pale skin and fine features, a small nose, sharp chin, and heartshaped
face. Parted at the side, her hair cascaded across her face like a shiny black waterfall
concealing one eye. She wore a black Jane’s Addiction tee-shirt, a short black skirt, long black
satin fingerless gloves, and black Doc Martin’s.
“Guess who just lost the tag of weirdest kid in school?” she said. She pointed her thumbs at
her chest and said, “This girl.” She cocked an eyebrow upward. “Do you eat people, big boy?”
Rex snorted out a laugh. “Only when I’m hungry.”
“You hungry now?”
Rex shook his head. “Aren’t you afraid of me?”
“Should I be?” she said.
“Everyone else is.”
A small smile played across her lips. “Who wants to be like everyone else?”
Rex grinned.
The girl extended her hand and he took it. “Ariella,” she said in a cheery tone.
The warmth of her skin crept into Rex’s fingers and seemed to suck the air from his lungs. “Rex
Morton,” he managed to stammer out. He stared at her and struggled to say something more. The
moment begged for it, something witty that would convey in a casual way that he liked her. But
his brain went blank. She smiled and let her hand drop from his. As her warmth evaporated from
his skin, he realized the she was escaping him. The opportunity had passed him by. Embarrassed,
he looked straight ahead at the blackboard feeling lame and stupid.
My Review

I found this book to be interesting and deeply moving. It reminds us all how we, as humans, hate and fear the unknown. It made me intensely angry because I hated how everyone treated Rex. He was infected through no fault of his own and yet, he is punished for it by those around him. I found that the supporting characters were all very interesting and some were very funny. I thought that the story was a bit slow moving but it is a great story for anyone who enjoyed Warm Bodies. I give this book 3 Fairies for an intense read that held my attention.

About BECKON ME:

Everything nineteen-year-old Karina Mitchell knows about death changes the instant that she and her best friend, Rainey, are shot. For one, souls don’t die. They cross over. Only, Rainey’s soul hasn’t, and her ghost is hell bent on haunting Karina.

When Karina begins her sophomore year of college and moves into the apartment that she was supposed to share with Rainey, she learns a few shocking truths from her mysterious and gorgeous blue-eyed neighbor, Eli.

One: Karina has been chosen to become a Beckoner—an immortal conduit of the dead who helps safely guide souls to the other side.

Two: She’s the reason that Rainey’s soul can’t cross over—Rainey followed her back from death and missed her window to be at peace.

Three: Eli is hot. As in swoon-worthy, to-die-for, will-make-you-forget-yourself hot. And it turns out, Eli is a Beckoner, too.

Despite her attraction to Eli, the decision to become a Beckoner isn’t an easy one—it would mean giving up her own mortality … her own soul. But if she doesn’t, her best friend will be left to suffer an eternity at the hands of the evil Ceptors, dark creatures that feed on the souls left behind. After all, it’s her fault Rainey is haunting her.

Time is running out, and Karina needs to decide: Are love and loyalty worth sacrificing her soul?

Gone Reading Product Review

I was recently contacted by Brad from Gone Reading to see if I would like to review more items from Gone Reading.  I, of course, said yes.  What an honor!  I loved the items I reviewed last summer from Gone reading.  I received three items from Gone Reading: BookBax Pro, TravelFlex Booklight, and the Paperback Lotion. Here's my review!

BookBax

The BookBax is a very handy holder for books, tablets and e-readers.  It is simple to turn the pages while you have a book in the BookBax Pro.  There is a clip system that both holds the pages down in even the most violent winds when you read outside and allows you to turn the pages with ease.  It can hold the pages down while your book is in your lap or it can be used like an easel to hold your book up on a table while you read.  My husband and I tested the BookBax with large and small hardcover books, paperback books, comic book trade paperbacks and my Kindle.  It help up my e-reader perfectly with the non slip resting surface.  All of the books we tried worked perfectly.  I was able to sit out in the yard on a blustery March day as I watched the children play and my reading was not interrupted by the wind ruffling my pages.  A wonderful multi use reading tool!

TravelFlex Booklight

The Travel Flex is a sweet little book light that solves all of the problems that I found with booklights as a kid.  (I may have owed a fair few in my day while reading in the middle of the night under my blanket.)  This small little reading light is truly LIGHT.  It folds nicely to fit a pocket, purse or backpack and it doesn't weigh down your book as you read paperbacks.  The light is perfect for reading in the dark without bothering those near you.  It would be perfect for long train rides or flights when you have near neighbors while trying to read.  I found that the light allowed my husband to sleep peacefully next to me while I was reading.  I also enjoyed that the light did not cause eye strain as I tried to stay awake long enough for "just one more chapter".

Paperback Lotion

This lotion was a wildcard because really, how do you describe the smell of a brand new book or a well loved antique book?  I can't.  I found that I didn't really care how the lotion is described because it is lovely.  It comes in a sturdy package that I feel safe keeping in my purse.  (Which my children will occasionally step all over in their haste.)  The bottle and the scent are unisex, just like the hobby of reading.  My husband, my eldest son and I all use the lotion often.  The feel of the lotion is absolutely luxurious and non greasy.  The scent is intriguing,  I keep sniffing my hands when I have it on to try and figure out what comprises the scent.  I know that everyone has their own preferences but our family greatly enjoyed this lotion and the Paperback scent.
I once again must thank Brad from Gone Reading for his generous offer of items for review.  He is a wonderful friend in this hobby.  I hope that you will CLICK HERE to check out Gone Reading.  They have items for every reader, no matter how they read and they have great gifts for the literary minded as well.

Years and an Ocean Blog Tour!

?

Years and an Ocean by Jo Noelle

Going to a séance was supposed to be a harmless diversion in Victorian England, but for Delia Spencer, it was life altering. Since that day, she has been plagued by fainting spells, while her consciousness visits Elle Thomas more than a century in the future. In modern-day New York, Elle has kept secret the dream-like memories of Delia’s life. As the visits have become more frequent, Elle is confused about what is her life and what is not. Back in England, Delia’s father is determined to marry her off to any marginally suitable man before her illness becomes known to society. But will Delia consent, now that she’s had a taste of Elle’s independence?

Praise for Years and an Ocean

I enjoyed this fresh take on characters that connect over differing time periods. The characters were rich and interesting, and I loved the historical aspect with the modern. Clean romance is a bonus. The light fantasy elements bordered on paranormal, but never got out of the realm of plausibility. Good writing and a story I can recommend. ~Renae Mackley

This book was not at all predictable, which I love! Just when I thought I had the ending figured out, Jo Noelle took me for a ride. ~Stacy Carroll
Excerpt
Moth holes in the threadbare velvet curtains wink with the last western rays of sunlight as Mrs. Aggret, a medium from America, excuses herself to prepare the chamber.
“Delia, we’ll go to hell for this, won’t we?” Madeline whispers terribly close to my bonnet. The image of a fly buzzing in my ear comes to mind, but I acknowledge her comment instead of shooing her away. She’s sure we’re consorting with the devil—or at least his minions—and has mumbled a constant sermon into my ear from the time we sat in the carriage, crossed town, and climbed the stairs to this upper apartment.
But there’s no such thing as divination, and mediums are just actresses with a steady income. Instead of announcing my opinion aloud, I press my lips together so I don’t ruin the outing for my friends. Really, it’s kind of a brilliant trade for a woman who has to live independently and doesn’t have a conscience about stealing. They probably think they sell entertainment, and tonight, I’d agree. Any diversion would be better than sitting at the academy or packing to return home in a few days. Though the other girls seem excited to return to their families and be presented to society, Saint Helena’s Academy for Girls has been a godsend to me.
Who would have thought that this group of debutants would sit in a shabby apartment, bubbling with fascination at the prospect of visiting with spirits? Truthfully, each face carries its own level of comfort, from Janey’s look of amusement to Charlotte’s expression of boredom, and Madeline looking a little sick. My expectations are low—if this distracts me from thinking more on my family, I’ll call tonight a success.
Ruth leans closer to the group. “Could we contact my grandmother? Does our spiritual guide take requests for which ghosts will visit?”
“We didn’t come all this way to talk to your senile grandmother.” Charlotte doesn’t even notice the shock on Ruth face. “I’m hoping for a murderer or his victim—someone who died in this very building, maybe.”
“Do you suppose the spirit of the victim will be battered and bloody?” I ask, trying to look sincere, but a secret smile passes my lips and calls Charlotte’s attention.
“Of course they are,” she answers with a serious countenance. I jab her lightly with my elbow, but she continues, “Well, what do you expect from someone living on Marylebone Lane? I’m sure our medium contacts only the seedy types for our enjoyment. Perhaps on the way home we can stop off at a fistfight or a bear mauling.” Though her voice is dull with mock nonchalance, I have no doubt she hopes to see one or the other—maybe she already has.
Madeline takes a deep breath and whispers again. “This is sacrilegious. I know it is. We should leave before we’re possessed by demons.” She bites the corner of her lip, her eyes scanning the room as if a ghost will pop through the wall right into her body.
Janey removes her gloves and drops them into her reticule. “It isn’t sacrilegious, and we’re not going to get possessed. It’s spiritual. They are spirits. We have spirits. And we’re just going to chat. Now take off your gloves so we can get a better connection with the table.”
Obeying Janey’s suggestion, Ruth tugs on her calf-skin gloves. “It isn’t spiritual. It’s science—another part of the world science is discovering. I suppose that the spirits still maintain their ability to choose. If they are present tonight, it’s because they choose to contact us.”
I wish it were magic. Then I’d have the medium transport me anywhere else and as someone else who wouldn’t have to go home next week.
Our medium parts a curtain and reenters the parlor, candlelight flickering behind her. Silently, she makes eye contact with each of us, her gestures bidding us into the next room, arranging us around a wooden table, seating herself between Janey and me. The night is clear, but the air smells of dust with the static charge of a lightning storm, though it didn’t feel like this a minute ago. If this isn’t a well-staged theatrical as I’m expecting, then I hope Janey has the right of it and not Madeline. I survey the faces of my friends, smiling or grimacing, as Mrs. Aggret begins snuffing the tapers in the center of the table. It takes a few seconds for my eyes to adjust to the dimming light.
“Many spirits linger near tonight. Keep your palms against the wood to thwart the malevolent souls seeking entrance.” She presses her own hands to the table, nodding to us to do the same. Madeline’s hands press the table hard enough for her fingernails to whiten.
With only one small candle lit and glowing red embers in the fireplace, the room is nearly dark. The medium begins to hum, her head lolling from shoulder to shoulder, her eyes closed. A flicker of anticipation courses through me, part excitement, part fear. When the table shifts back and forth under our hands, I’m close enough to see our medium’s palms resting lightly atop of it, and I realize she isn’t moving it. The feeling of icy sparks wraps around my arms and spills down my spine. I want to shake them out, but I dare not remove my hands from the wood.
The table rocks sharply to the side and drops back, then tips away again. The hair in my clip rises in a breeze. When I peek around the table, no one else’s hair is moving. A cold presence brushes across my back and neck, and my eyes fully open, looking for whoever was touching me, but there is no one in the room with us. I feel it again and gasp, then raise my hand to rub the sensation from my skin. A warning voice whispers fear to my mind. “There’s nothing there. You’re imagining it.” I tell myself with much less confidence than I wish, my warning voice whispers fear to my mind.
Mrs. Aggret’s voice sounds shaky and frightened. “Who’s there? What do you want?” Then she moans, slumping toward her hands, convulsing then stiffening, her head skewing to the side and her chin rising. When she grabs my hand, lightning riots through my body, scorching through my blood, blasting across my skin, and writhing against my heart in palpitations. Though I try to rip my fingers from the table, they don’t respond, and neither does my voice. I’m frozen in place from an electric charge gnawing through me. Gray shadows of myself convulse in and out of my body. I feel as if my flesh, my mind, my very spirit were fighting to remain together. Panic swells in my chest.
The medium’s mouth opens for each word, but it is not her voice I hear. “An altered creature you have become—two lives, a time-ripped soul, from one.” As she finishes, two things happen at once—an arctic breath of wind chokes out the final candle, and the embers in the fireplace explode with life.
My friends leap from their chairs and back away from the fire, their mouths wide with shock, but I hear nothing. The sound in the room is completely white and blank. And it appears that I am the only one incapable of escaping my chair.
Looking down, I will my hands to move, but they stay firmly attached to the tabletop, my thumbs anchored to the edge with ghostly white knuckles. Crimson drops splatter the front of my dress, falling from my nose. Janey’s eyes are wide as she rushes to my side. From deep within my chest, a rip travels up my body, bisecting me, burning away the cold, scalding my heart, searing reality from my sight.
