Mental Health Giveaway Hop

Interesting fact: According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, One in four adults−approximately 61.5 million Americans−experiences mental illness in a given year. One in 17−about 13.6 million−live with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder.  (Learn more here.)  So none of us are alone in our experiences and we should not feel that we are alone.

Today I am giving one winner the chance to pick one of three books that have been instrumental in getting me through a terribly rough time lately.  I have suffered with bouts of depression and constant anxiety for as long as I can remember.  In 2011, I decided that I was not going to allow my anxiety and depression to continue to ruin my life and my relationships.  I have been on medication to help control my symptoms since then and I can feel the everyday difference.  A wise friend told me at the time that I was battling with the decision:  You are so strong to be getting help.  It is NOT weakness to admit that you need more help- it is a strength.  Those words helped me decide to see my doctor and to ask about getting started with medicine.  I have also recently began helping my husband as he begins his own mental health journey.  His upbringing has left him with scars that have caused him emotional pain and have made social interaction hard for him.  Our recent trauma has caused him to finally get to the point where he wants to seek help.  Our journey to mental and emotional wellness has also led us to learn about the rights that we all have as we go into counseling.  Please know your rights and never let ANYONE take advantage of you as you seek to better yourself and your life.  Learn more here.  I also have taken the steps to learn more about myself, my problems and how they affect my life.  One of the tools I use is the free app called Self Help For Anxiety Management by University of the West of England.  It allows me to track my anxious feelings and how the world around me causes me to feel.  You can find it for yourself here.  I have also spent a lot of time reading about how to help myself through life.  SO, I am giving away one copy of one of the books that has helped me.  The giveaway is open to any reader who is at least 13 years of age and can receive books from The Book Depository.  Here are the options:

After many years of writing her own words in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to be more attentive to the Savior's voice and begin listening for what He was saying. So with pen in hand, she embarked on a journey that forever changed her--and many others around the world. In these powerful pages are the words and Scriptures Jesus lovingly laid on her heart. Words of reassurance, comfort, and hope. Words that have made her increasingly aware of His presence and allowed her to enjoy His peace. Jesus is calling out to you in the same way. Maybe you share the author's need for a great sense of "God with you." Or perhaps Jesus seems distant without you knowing why. Or maybe you have wandered farther from Him that you ever imagined you would. Here is a year's worth of daily readings from Young's journals to bring you closer to Christ and move your time with Him from monologue to a dialogue. Each day is written as if Jesus Himself were speaking to you. Because He is. Do you hear Him calling?

The 100 simple practices found in Five Good Minutes(R) are designed to help even the busiest person start the day right. Using just five minutes of mindfulness, relaxation, or imagery techniques during their morning routines, readers can set their intentions and greet the day feeling calm, centered, and energized. What difference can five minutes make in the crazy, nonstop course of a sixteen-hour day? For people feeling overwhelmed with responsibility, bored with the same tired routine, or frustrated about how to create meaning in their lives, a little time well spent can lead to extraordinary changes. This book shows readers how to dramatically improve their lives in just a few moments each day. The concept is powerfully simple: Readers take the time each morning to be fully present, to set a clear intention for themselves, and to really engage in any of 100 fun and easy-to-follow practices. These practices help readers feel good, get motivated, and become inspired to change their lives for the better. Over time, these activities become guideposts readers will return to throughout the day, providing energy and inspiration when they need them most. In other words, the time readers of this book take for themselves in the morning might just be the five good minutes that change their lives.Five Good Minutes is a trademark of New Harbinger Publications, Inc.

Many of us have experienced a traumatic event in our lives, whether in childhood or adulthood. This trauma may be emotional, or it may cause intense physical pain. In some cases, it can cause both. Studies have shown that compassion and mindfulness based interventions can help people suffering from trauma to experience less physical and emotional pain in their daily lives. What's more, many long-time yoga and meditation teachers have a history of teaching these practices to their clients with successful outcomes. In Yoga for Emotional Trauma, a psychotherapist and a meditation teacher present a yogic approach to emotional trauma by instructing you to apply mindful awareness, breathing, yoga postures, and mantras to their emotional and physical pain. In the book, you'll learn why yoga is so effective for dealing with emotional trauma. Yoga and mindfulness can transform trauma into joy. It has done so for countless millions. The practices outlined in this book will teach you how to use and adapt the ancient practices and meditations of yoga for your own healing. Drawing upon practices and philosophy from eastern wisdom traditions, and texts such as the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bagavad Gita, and the Buddhist Sutras, this book will take you on a journey into wholeness, one that embraces body, mind and spirit. Inside, you will discover the lasting effect that trauma has on physiology and how yoga resets the nervous system. Combining yogic principles, gentle yoga postures, and mindfulness practices, this book filled with sustenance and practical support that will move you along your own healing path.

Thankful for Books Hop!

I am so thankful for the authors and publishers who share their books with me in exchange for my reviews.  As a mom of 4, there is little money left in my budget for personal things like books.  Book blogging is the only way that I can afford to read all of these amazing books.  I do buy books but I get to read far more than I would if I had to buy them all.  I'm also thankful for the authors who write about Ohio and don't make it sound completely awful.  Today I have a book from one such author.  I have one ebook for an international winner and one paperback for a US winner of Christine Nolfi's Second Chance Grill.  It is a pretty clean romance with excellent characters and and emotional story.  Here is the blurb:

An unforgettable tale of love, loss and second chances. Second Chance Grill is the prequel to Treasure Me, 2012 Next Generation Indie Awards Finalist, which The Midwest Book Review calls “A riveting read for those who enjoy adventure fiction, highly recommended.” Dr. Mary Chance needs a sabbatical from medicine to grieve the loss of her closest friend. But when she inherits a struggling restaurant in Liberty, Ohio she isn’t prepared for Blossom Perini. Mary can’t resist falling for the precocious preteen—or the girl’s father. The bond they forge will transform all their lives and set in motion an outpouring of love that spreads across America. Welcome back to Liberty, where the women surrounding the town’s only restaurant are as charming as they are eccentric.

Summer Giveaway Hop!

Hello and welcome!  Thanks for stopping by my Summer Giveaway Hop!  I have an Advanced Review Copy of In Sunlight and In Shadow by Mark Helprin.  This book is not due out until September!  Here is the cover and Goodreads blurb:

Entrancing in its lyricism, In Sunlight and in Shadow so powerfully draws you into New York at the dawn of the modern age that, as in a vivid dream, you will not want to leave. In 1946, Harry Copeland has returned after fighting in the 82nd Airborne from North Africa all the way to the Elbe. Reluctantly assuming the direction of the family fine leather goods manufacture, he finds his life unsatisfactory and on hold – until he is “accidentally” united with Catherine Thomas Hale, the woman for whom he has been waiting all his life, although the forces behind his patience have never been revealed to him. A young actress, singer, and heiress, she has been waiting for him, even if she has known this only in flashes that do not come clear to her until the end of the narrative, and that have not prevented her engagement to a much older man who has been taking advantage of her since childhood. The meeting of Catherine and Harry, their courtship, and their intense love, play out on the stage of New York awakening at mid-century – in the deep worlds of the theater, industry, and high finance, and during the collision of aristocratic New York society with the formidable wave of second-generation, fully assimilated Jews. Though after being broken in the war Harry wants nothing but peace, family, and love, organized crime carries on its extortions as always, even in a city now full of the kind of men who stormed the Point du Hoc and the Siegfried Line. This becomes his moral and physical struggle. While Catherine’s is of a different nature, it is just as consequential, and the courage required of her is perhaps even greater. Of the widest scope – from the air over Sicily to the heat-and-color-saturated Sacramento Valley; the Bay of Biscay to the sea off Maine; the steel mills of Gary, Indiana to the beaches of Amagansett; London in the blitz; the invasion of Normandy; and a single shell gliding across an American lake in August; from the luminous houses of the wealthy to the pounding of the boards beneath a Broadway chorus line – this is yet, first, and foremost a love story, but also a hymn to New York of the period when one great age elided into the other that we call our own. Rich in language and classical allusion, it is true to the mottoes at its outset: the Dantean “Amor mi mosse, che me fa parlare,” “Love moved me, and made me speak,” and to the lines of Lucretius that describe Catherine’s extraordinary representation of the powers, beauties, and graces of womanhood – “Nothing comes forth into the shores of light, or is glad or lovely without you.”
To win, you can enter on the Rafflecopter form below.  If the Rafflecopter is not working for any reason, you can submit your information via email to AmethystDaydreams at zoho dot com.  To win you must have a US or Canadian address (as I am shipping the book and it is pretty heavy).  You must also be at least 13 years of age.  I will contact the winner within a day or so of the end of this hop and the winner will then have 48 hours to respond with their mailing information before a replacement winner is chosen.  Again, thanks so much for stopping by!  I hope your summer is going well and I hope that you will join me for my birthday giveaway on Friday August 3rd!

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grows dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war. Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out. When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

Hi everyone and welcome!!  It's the Summer Reads Giveaway Hop!  I have something pretty cool for you.  I  have a paperback of the The Iron Witch by Karen Mahoney for one lucky winner!  Here's what I'm talking about:

Freak. That's what her classmates call seventeen-year-old Donna Underwood. When she was seven, a horrific fey attack killed her father and drove her mother mad. The child of alchemists, Donna feels cursed by the magical heritage that destroyed her parents and any chance she had for a normal life. The only thing that keeps her sane and grounded is her relationship with her best friend, Navin Sharma. When the darkest outcasts of Faerie—the vicious wood elves—abduct Navin, Donna finally has to accept her role in the centuries old war between the humans and the fey. Assisted by Xan, a gorgeous half-fey dropout with secrets of his own, Donna races to save her friend—even if it means betraying everything her parents and the alchemist community fought to the death to protect.

The YA Faeries and Fantasy Giveaway Hop!

Hello and Welcome to my stop on the YA Faeries and Fantasy giveaway hop!  I have a real soft spot of faeries as is evidenced by my ever growing collection of fairies all over my house and yard.  I am going to be giving away one of my favorite fairy books of 2011:  The Replacement by Brenna Yovanoff.  I'm giving away my ARC of the book (it's already out but I got myself a hardcover so I can reread it and the arc is in great shape) and a The Replacement bookmark.  I loved this book.  The Replacement is about the idea of changlings in fairy lore.  A changling is the frail child of fairies left in the place of a perfectly healthy human child.  Usually the changling dies in the story and the family never sees their infant again.  This happening was a very real fear on the British Isles in the past.  People had all kinds of ways to keep it from happening.  Here is the Goodreads blurb:

Mackie Doyle is not one of us. Though he lives in the small town of Gentry, he comes from a world of tunnels and black murky water, a world of living dead girls ruled by a little tattooed princess. He is a Replacement, left in the crib of a human baby sixteen years ago. Now, because of fatal allergies to iron, blood, and consecrated ground, Mackie is fighting to survive in the human world.

Mackie would give anything to live among us, to practice on his bass or spend time with his crush, Tate. But when Tate's baby sister goes missing, Mackie is drawn irrevocably into the underworld of Gentry, known as Mayhem. He must face the dark creatures of the Slag Heaps and find his rightful place, in our world, or theirs.

You can find my review here.  This giveaway will run from January 6 at midnight EST to 12:01 January 13th.  You must have a US mailing address and you must be over 13 years of age.  To enter, please fill in the Rafflecopter below.  If there is a problem with the Rafflecopter, please feel free to email me at the address in the upper right hand corner.  Thanks so much for hopping by !!

Spooktacular Giveaway Hop- Win a WVMP Series book!

Hi everyone and welcome to my stop on this giveaway hop!  I'm going to be giving away a book of the winner's choice from Jeri Smith-Ready's WVMP Series.  This is an adult series- violence, vampires, and some sexual shenanigans- so the winner must be at least 18 years old.  I first read this series as part of the Read Along hosted by Fictitious Delicious this month and this book series is made of AWESOME, like everything Jeri Smith-Ready does!  There are three books in this series so far (and one internet novella).  The winner will get to pick which book they want.  I'm also throwing in some candy because we all know that you can't have Halloween without candy.  I'm including some of Jeri's favorites!  Please note that the option of choosing a book is so that people who may have the first book or two can have their choice.  The books will not make sense read out of order.  To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter below (email me if you have problems with it!) and leave a comment on this post telling me what your favorite Supernatural Being is!  Let's take a look at the books!

Here's the Goodreads Blurb for Wicked Game- WVMP Radio Book 1:
LATE NIGHT RADIO YOU CAN SINK YOUR TEETH INTO

Recovering con artist Ciara Griffin is trying to live the straight life, even if it means finding a (shudder!) real job. She takes an internship at a local radio station, whose late-night time-warp format features 1940s blues, '60s psychedelia, '80s goth, and more, all with an uncannily authentic flair. Ciara soon discovers just how the DJs maintain their cred: they're vampires, stuck forever in the eras in which they were turned.

Ciara's first instinct, as always, is to cut and run. But communications giant Skywave wants to buy WVMP and turn it into just another hit-playing clone. Without the station — and the link it provides to their original Life Times — the vampires would "fade," becoming little more than mindless ghosts of the past. Suddenly a routine corporate takeover is a matter of life and undeath.

To boost ratings and save the lives of her strange new friends, Ciara rebrands the station as "WVMP, the Lifeblood of Rock 'n' Roll." In the ultimate con, she hides the DJs' vampire nature in plain sight, disguising the bloody truth as a marketing gimmick. WVMP becomes the hottest thing around — next to Ciara's complicated affair with grunge vamp Shane McAllister. But the "gimmick" enrages a posse of ancient and powerful vampires who aren't so eager to be brought into the light. Soon the stakes are higher — and the perils graver — than any con game Ciara's ever played..

The rest of the books can be found by clicking on the WVMP Icon below!

The Carnival is over!  Thanks for entering!!
