A Collar for Christmas Blog Tour: Interview with author A. E. Lawless

Hi everyone!  Today, I have a great stop on the blog tour for A. E. Lawless's A Collar for Christmas.

For actor Liam, anxiety and panic attacks are old friends, but they only get worse the more famous he gets. Nothing has ever worked to help him control the anxiety until his costar, Aaron, introduces him to bondage. Too bad Liam develops feelings for Aaron and ruins the only solution he's ever found for his neuroses.

Aaron only wants to keep history from repeating itself. He's already had one costar spin out of control, resulting in her tragic death, he can't just sit idly by and watch another friend and colleague destroy himself from the inside out. He'll do anything to keep that from happening--even enter into a non-sexual BDSM arrangement with him.

What starts out as a way to control Liam's anxiety becomes so much more. At least for Liam. So, tired of pretending he doesn't want Aaron in his life for good, Liam decides to give him the perfect Christmas gift. The kind that will show Aaron exactly what Liam wants from their relationship: the collar he's been dreaming of Aaron putting on him for months.
Here is my interview with A E Lawless:

What made you choose to show BDSM in a non-sexual light at the beginning of the book? I really feel that it shows a great understanding of the subject matter.

That’s kind of a tough one. Mostly I just wanted to, that concept was actually what this whole plot was shaped around. But I think the desire to do it really came from wanting to show a different side of BDSM. I try to do that in all my books. There are a lot of misconceptions about the BDSM lifestyle and there are a lot of “experts” that like to talk about how BDSM should and shouldn’t be done and really my point of view is that BDSM is very personal, it’s not one size fits all. The only way a BDSM relationship is going to work for you, is if it caters specifically to you and your partner’s needs. I like busting BDSM “myths.”

Do you have a favorite scene or part of the story?

I love the last scene. After writing the really emotional parts of the story it was nice to wrap it up with some fluff and family bonding.

What are your favorite things about Liam and Aaron?

My favorite thing about Liam is his self-awareness. He knows his flaws, but he also knows his strengths. He never tries to hide from himself. I appreciate that in a character; makes my job easier. My favorite thing about Aaron is his caring heart. He genuinely wants to help people and make them happy. He’s the perfect service Top.

What is your writing process like?

Very structured. Every story begins as an idea. Then I create characters to suit the idea using a pretty specific character bio sheet. Then I outline the setting in much the same way. I research any elements I’m not familiar with. Then I create an overall outline of what happens in each chapter. Then I fill in a more detailed chapter outline for each chapter. Then I make notes about key points or the tone of each chapter. Then I write. I jump around and write in pieces so that I’m never getting stuck in one place. I also write in layers. Actions first, then emotions then details.
It’s kind of crazy but it works for me. :D
