The Girl in the Steel Corset (The Steampunk Chronicles 1) by Kady Cross

When I first saw the cover for this book I knew it would be a great book.  Look at that beautiful cover!!  I love that you can see the steel corset on the cover too, very cool.  I love steampunk (you know, now that I have actually read some)!  The whole mixing of real and not, the vintage feel of it.  Love it!  Now, for the story.

Finley Jayne has been let go from two jobs already when she has a ... misunderstanding with the youngest son of her employer.  She must flee before something worse happens and as she runs into the night she runs straight into Griffin King- no really, she literally runs into him.  He can see that she is special so he takes her into his home and his special group of friends who can do things that "normal" people can't.  Will she fit in with his friends?  There's Emily who is pretty much a genius with an affinity for mechanics who is not so secretly in love with Sam who is Griffin's oldest friend and part robot.  Then there is Jasper, the American cowboy with a secret.  They all have abilities that make them special and make them able to protect Britain better than anyone else.  They are investigating a criminal called the Machinist who has been making seemingly random attacks all over London with his automatons.  What is he after and how far will he go to prove his point?  Can Griffin and the others stop the Machinist before it is too late?

This book is GREAT.  I can not stress that enough.  I loved every minute of it and was so sad to see it end!  I hope that we will see more from Finley, Griffin and the others soon.  The story is pretty fast paced with lots of (clean) romance, action and adventure.  Finley is a main character who can totally stand up for herself.  She fears hurting others but will do what is needed to keep her friends safe.  I love how strong and independent she is.  She's also really complex as a Jekyll and Hyde character.  I love it.  Griffin?  SWOON!  He is wonderful too.  Such a fun character.  He's really great to Finley but he can also kick some butt when he has too.  He's also supernaturally talented and smart.  Yummy!  Emily is also pretty fun.  I love the fact that they all lean on this tiny little Irish lass for all their mechanical needs.  She's also brave and strong in her own way.  Jasper is a pretty fun character too.  Love that he is special but also an American in England.  Sam is a sweet guy who is physically super strong but sometimes lets his emotions get the best of him.  All around, I think anyone would love this story, steampunk fan or not.  I recommend it for all teens as there really isn't anything too graphic.

You can find out more about Kady Cross on her website and she will be at BEA on Wednesday the 25th.  I hope to see her there!  There is also a Finley Jayne short Story that you can get for the Kindle for FREE on Amazon so check that out! You can find it here: The Strange Case of Finley Jayne.

The Girl in the Steel Corset earns 5 Fairies for MAD steampunkery, a sassy chick with mechanical smarts and Griffin the sexy boy wonder.
