V is for Virgin Blog Tour!

Welcome to my review as part of the Blog Tour run by Kathy at I'm a Reader, Not a Writer.  This book was a breath of fresh air!  I really enjoyed it.  Here's the Goodreads blurb:
When Val Jensen gets dumped for her decision to stay a virgin until marriage, the nasty breakup goes viral on YouTube, making her the latest internet sensation.

After days of ridicule from her peers, Val starts a school-wide campaign to rally support for her cause. She meant to make a statement, but she never dreamed the entire nation would get caught up in the controversy.

As if becoming nationally recognized as “Virgin Val” isn’t enough, Val’s already hectic life starts to spin wildly out of control when bad boy Kyle Hamilton, lead singer for the hit rock band Tralse, decides to take her abstinence as a personal challenge.

How can a girl stay true to herself when this year’s Sexiest Man Alive is doing everything in his power to win her over?

The title might make you wonder what kind of stance this book is going to take. I will admit to being worried as I read the first half of the book because there is a fair amount of "slut shaming." The behavior is not glorified, however, and I think that it is indicative of high school behavior. There is no gory talk of sex and I would say that the talk of virginity is handled in a mature way.  Val comes to a better standing of her own stance and others' during the book. I think that this book is great for igniting thought and conversation.  The book is not preachy or overly religious for those who worry about that.  It's really just a well written, thought provoking book about why we take a stand.  It also lets girls know that no matter what they decide, that their body is their own and no one should make decisions about it but them.  That is a lesson any girl can use.  Val also learns that if something is meant to be, it will happen and that you should not change to make it happen.  I can't wait to share this book with my daughter when she is older!  I highly recommend this book to women and men alike.

I read this book and liked it too. I especially liked the friendly banter between Valerie and her best friend.
