When Love Comes to Town by Tom Lennon

I received a copy of the classic GLBT novel, When Love Comes to Town through Netgalley for review.  Here is the cover and the Goodreads blurb:

The year is 1990, and in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland, Neil Byrne plays rugby, keeps up with the in-crowd at his school, and is just a regular guy. A guy who’s gay. It’s a secret he keeps from the wider world as he explores the city at night and struggles to figure out how to reveal his real self—and to whom. First published in Ireland in 1993 and compared to The Catcher in the Rye by critics, Tom Lennon’s When Love Comes to Town is told with honesty, humor, and originality.
This book was an emotional read for sure.  Neil faces so many ups and downs.  He ends up in the hospital.  His father throws him out.  His sisters react to his coming out.  His friend react to his coming out.  I wouldn't say that the ending is happy- it isn't.  The ending is hopeful and realistic.  I highly recommend this one to everyone.  It helps you to put yourself in someone else's shoes and see how thing affect them.  A worthwhile read.

You can click here to add When Love Comes to Town to your Goodreads.  You can also purchase this classic novel on Amazon.  I give this one 3 Fairies for a heart wrenching read that reminds us all what life was like in the pre-internet era and how hard it was to be different in that world.
