The Bane Chronicles: #8 & #10 by Cassandra Clare and Sarah Rees Brennan

I'm working my way through the Bane Chronicles recently and today I want to review my two favorites so far.

Magnus Bane may or may not be dating Alec Lightwood, but he definitely needs to find him the perfect birthday present.

Set in the time between City of Ashes and City of Glass, warlock Magnus Bane is determined to find the best birthday present possible for Alec Lightwood, the Shadowhunter he may or may not be dating. And he’s also got to deal with the demon he’s conjured up for a very irritating client...

This short story is absolutely darling. I loved this peek in Magnus' relationship with Alec. We get to see a smidge of it in the books but these shorts really offer a better idea of what we missed while reading about Jace and Clary. Alec is so sweet and naive in the realm of dating, but slaying demons- that he can handle. So adorable! I really enjoyed watching Magnus Bane, centuries old High Warlock of Brooklyn, floundering about what to buy his sort of boyfriend. The entire story paints a picture of the world that the Downworlders and Shadowhunters inhabit. I just loved it.

Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood might fall in love—but first they have a first date.

When Magnus Bane, warlock, meets Alec Lightwood, Shadowhunter, sparks fly. And what happens on their first date lights a flame...

This story shows just how HUMAN a warlock is. Magnus over thinks his first date with Alec and nearly sabotages it in his worry over it. Alec is shy and unsure but you can tell how badly he wants to be with Magnus. He's willing to risk everything for it. He steps up to protect Magnus in a threatening situation. He is so open and refreshing. I think that Magnus makes him think outside the box and step out of his comfort zone and Alec makes Magnus feel more grounded in reality, makes him feel more human. What a lovely story!

You can click here to add the Bane Chronicles on Goodreads. Author Cassandra Clare can be found on her website, Tumblr and on Twitter. Author Sarah Rees Brennan can be found on her website, Tumblr, Live Journal and on Twitter as well. I give both of these short stories 5 Fairies for lovely tales of love and life.
