Bright Young Things (Bright Young Things 1) by Anna Godberson

I was so excited to get my hands on a copy of Bright Young Things by Anna Godberson.  I've heard so many great things about her Luxe books and now her Bright Young Things series.  Here's the Goodreads blurb:

The year is 1929. New York is ruled by the Bright Young Things: flappers and socialites seeking thrills and chasing dreams in the anything-goes era of the Roaring Twenties.
Letty Larkspur and Cordelia Grey escaped their small Midwestern town for New York's glittering metropolis. All Letty wants is to see her name in lights, but she quickly discovers Manhattan is filled with pretty girls who will do anything to be a star…
Cordelia is searching for the father she's never known, a man as infamous for his wild parties as he is for his shadowy schemes. Overnight, she enters a world more thrilling and glamorous than she ever could have imagined—and more dangerous. It's a life anyone would kill for . . . and someone will.
The only person Cordelia can trust is Astrid Donal, a flapper who seems to have it all: money, looks, and the love of Cordelia's brother, Charlie. But Astrid's perfect veneer hides a score of family secrets.
Across the vast lawns of Long Island, in the illicit speakeasies of Manhattan, and on the blindingly lit stages of Broadway, the three girls' fortunes will rise and fall—together and apart. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Luxe comes an epic new series set in the dizzying last summer of the Jazz Age.
This book has a great feel to it.  It's like going back in time with a time machine.  You really feel as if you are in the twenties.  I love that these girls' stories are not all sunshine and roses.  I know my grandmother's stories of this time period are not all goodness and light but you can see the good times, the friendship and the trials that these girls go through.  There is mystery and suspense as well as an interesting storyline that follows these three girls.  All of the girls are interesting and different from one another.  The imagery of the book is vivid and really draws you in.  I enjoyed this book immensely but I don't want to give anything away.  I hope you'll give this great new series a try.  I'm going to try Anna's Luxe series soon!  This series is definitely for readers 14 and up.  The girls smoke, drink and end up in a few speakeasys.  The second book, Beautiful Days, was just released this week.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke and Bone was all the rage at BEA this year. EVERYONE wanted to get their hands on a copy, it seemed. I was lucky enough to get to Laini Taylor's signing of Smoke and Bone. She is a treat! I loved her adorable bubblegum pink hair and she is SO nice. Just a real class act.  Now, let's get to her epic story.  Here is the Goodreads blurb:

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky.

In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low.

And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war.

Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That is the question that haunts her, and she's about to find out.

When one of the strangers—beautiful, haunted Akiva—fixes his fire-colored eyes on her in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But will Karou live to regret learning the truth about herself?

from amazon:
"Wow. I wish I had written this book." (Patrick Rothfuss, author of The Wise Man's Fear )

"Daughter of Smoke and Bone is that rare beast: a novel that takes the familiar and makes it appear startling and new. Taylor has embraced the mythology of angels and reworked it in an extraordinary form, so that by the end of this lyrical, haunting book, I wanted to believe in the existence of these violent, tormented beings. I can hardly wait for the next installment." (John Connolly, author of The Book of Lost Things )
Yeah.  It is alot like that.  Smoke and Bone is a completely new and interesting interpretation of the whole angels and demons mythos.  You see everything from new eyes and the whole book leaves you wondering what is really going on and who the real monsters are.  At the end, I was freaking out.  I wanted there to be more!  I need there to be more!  The ending, like most of the book, is heart breaking and breathtaking.  Karou is an interesting heroine who makes you wish that she was your sister or best friend.  She's so vulnerable but so strong and she has such a strange, wonderful and sad life that you just want to hug her.  Brimstone, Issa and the others that live in Brimstone's shop in the Otherworld are interesting and complex characters.  The entire world is so real and vivid that you wonder what Karou is doing somewhere on Earth right now.  I really don't want to ruin this for anyone so I think I'll sum it up: this book is genius and everyone should give it a try.  I'd suggest this for readers over 14 as there is a fair sprinkling of violence and moral dilemas.

Hades (Halo #2) by Alexandra Adornetto

I've been dying to read this book for about a year now after winning a copy of Halo last fall.  I really enjoyed Halo and could not wait to read Hades.  And that desire only grew when they release the cover art.  SO BEAUTIFUL!  Here's the Goodreads Blurb:

Heaven Help Her.

Bethany Church is an angel sent to Earth to keep dark forces at bay. Falling in love was never part of her mission, but the bond between Beth and her mortal boyfriend, Xavier Woods, is undeniably strong. But even Xavier’s love, and the care of her archangel siblings, Gabriel and Ivy, can’t keep Beth from being tricked into a motorcycle ride that ends up in Hell. There, the demon Jake Thorn bargains for Beth’s release back to Earth. But what he asks of her will destroy her, and quite possibly, her loved ones, as well.

The story that Alexandra Adornetto built in her New York Times-bestselling debut, Halo, comes alive in action-packed and unexpected ways, as angels battle demons, and the power of love is put to the test.

I really enjoyed Halo because it was so different and it had such a great vibe about it as you read.  You could really see these angels trying to live life as humans in this town.  Hades was a very different book.  From very near to the beginning you get this feeling of foreboding- even before anything has really happened in the story. You can tell that Bethany has been immersed in the life of a teenage girl.  She doesn't feel as though she stands as firm in her beliefs as she did in Halo.  She really doesn't have the feel of an angel out of Heaven anymore.  We know what she is but she reads like a typical teenage girl who is obsessed with her boyfriend and other peoples' opinions of her.  This worry about what others think was an issue for me.  As an angel, I'd like to see her and Xavier lead by example.  Not pander to the masses.  But, I digress.  After a series of unfortunate events, Beth finds herself in Hell.  Yeah.  THE Hell.  Not where angels usually hang out.  The world building in Hades for this new world underneath our own is really nice.  You get this vivid picture in your mind of all the places and people of Hell as well as a very good view of what demons really are.  Beth manages to survive her incarceration in Hell with Jake Thorn better than most teen girls would handle a grounding.  She throws something of a fit.  Now, Jake.  I expected more from Jake.  But then again, I think I had my hopes set on something that doesn't exist in Alexandra's world.  I expected him to be more redemptive than he was.  I expected Beth to soften towards him a little.  Not in a romantic way but in the way that she should feel towards anyone who was emotionally in need.  As an angel, she should reach out to him and she doesn't really in my opinion.  Now, I am going to wax religious so if that bugs you please ignore.  Everyone has a right to their own faith or lack there of.  Power to you.  This is merely my issue with this book and the world that it details for us.  I do not like Miss Adornetto's view of Heaven and Hell after reading Hades.  I believe that God and all of his/her grace is what is important.  God will forgive so much that the evangelists would like to tell you will land you in Hell.  At least, I'd like to believe that.  The word love is big in the bible and God is love.  So, Alexandra's putting teenage girls and children under 12 in Hell grates on me.  In my view, there are no children in Hell.  Only EVIL people end up there.  Murders and such.  Not gossipy teens and small kids who never grew to know better.  Ok.  I've gotten that out.  I'm shutting up on the religion part now.  That being said.  I liked this book and I'm excited to see what book 3 holds for us!  I think that everyone should read this series for themselves and decide how they feel about it.

You can find out more about Alexandra Adornetto and her works on her author page and you can follow her on Twitter.  You can click here to add the Halo Series to your Goodreads.   It sounds like book 3 will be called Heaven and will be out in about a year.

Hades earns 3 Fairies for the strange underworld and an interesting Jake Thorn.

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey

I was lucky enough to win a copy of Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side recently.  This book was a delightfully fun read that really got me out of my reading funk.  Here's the Goodreads blurb:
The undead can really screw up your senior year . . .
Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancé. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war — and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction.
This was really a great book.  I loved that this tall, dark and handsome stranger appears, tries to get her to fall for his charms and the whole time Jessica is trying to ward him off.  I love that she doesn't just fall into his arms from the beginning.  Jessica is a pretty great character because she is true to herself and the people that she loves.  At the end she shows how brave she can be when someone she loves is on the line.  She has great inner strength.  Lucius is interesting because his exterior and his interior are so vastly different.  Lucius was raised by his uncle to rule his clan with an iron fist.  He knows from experience that people will use you to their own ends so you have to use them for your own purposes first.  Lucius didn't have the loving upbringing that Jessica did but under the exterior that his upbringing cultivated, he has a loving side.  Under it all, he just wants to love someone and have them love him in return while not having to be someone he isn't for them or having to worry about them using him.  It's kind of sad.  When Jessica does finally fall for him... it's pretty magical between them.

I would suggest this one for readers 14 and up due to some violence and talk of sexual shenanigans.  Some middle grades readers may be able to handle it.  There is a short story about Jessica and Lucius' wedding on Beth Fantaskey's Blog and you can always follow her on Twitter.  You can click here to add the Jessica Series books to your Goodreads!

Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side earns 4 Fairies for sexy and conflicted Lucius as well as plenty of good one liners.

Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr

This is a series that I have been wanting to start for a long time.  I love fairies and fairy lore so this series is perfect  for me.  Here's the Goodreads Blurb:

All teenagers have problems, but few of them can match those of Aislinn, who has the power to see faeries. Quite understandably, she wishes that she could share her friends' obliviousness and tries hard to avoid these invisible intruders. But one faery in particular refuses to leave her alone. Keenan the Summer King is convinced beyond all reasoning that Aislinn is the queen he has been seeking for nine centuries. What's a 21st-century girl to do when she's stalked by a suitor nobody else can see? A debut fantasy romance for the ages; superlative summer read.
I LOVE the feel of this book.  Melissa Marr takes fairies and brings them into the modern world.  They haunt our cities and towns, invisible to nearly everyone who is not fae themselves.  Aislinn's world has a very cool urban and industrial feel with the fairies a large part of it.  I enjoyed every moment of this story and cannot wait to read Ink Exchange (which is sitting on top of my To Be Read pile!).  This story is anything but typical and Melissa Marr will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.  The ending alone will blow your mind.  I don't want to give too much away but the fairy world of Wicked Lovely is amazing.  It feels equally magical and realistic.  You really feel like it could be a world that you could live in.  The characters are special.  You really feel for each and every one of them.  Well, except for Keenan's mom.... she has ISSUES.  But Keenan, Seth and Aislinn are just delightful characters who draw you into their lives and keep you invested until the end.

I would suggest this one for readers over 14 as there are some sexual references but nothing graphic.  There are also scenes of violence which may be a bit much for younger readers.  This series is one that everyone should try!  You can find out more about the Wicked Lovely Series and Melissa Marr by checking out her website or following her on Twitter.  You can click here to add the series to your Goodreads! Melissa also has an amazing new book out called Graveminder.  You can add it to your Goodreads here.  AND Melissa Marr has a short story from later in the Wicked Lovely series in the YA Paranormal Anthology Enthralled.  You can click here to add it to your Goodreads!

Wicked Lovely gets 4 Fairies for sexy Seth, uh- fairies, and for the a cool modern fairy world.

December Moon (Raven book 2) by Suzy Turner

Today I'm turning over the post to Suzy Turner, author of the Raven series, for a guest post as part of her blog tour.  So, here's Suzy!

After I finished writing Raven, I knew I had another two books to write in the series. I'd firmly decided The Raven Saga would be a trilogy. December Moon would be book two and the final instalment would be called The Lost Soul.

Well, I'm delighted to say that December Moon is finally finished and is now out in the big wide world for all to see! I must say, I had more fun writing the sequel than I did writing Raven, which was quite a sombre book. DM is more upbeat, written in the third person, has a little more comedy in it and has some really fun characters that were immensely exciting to write. One of my favourites is a ghost called Ruby, who I wrote about yesterday over at Inga Silberg's book blog. She's a real feisty character!

Kyran is a new fellow too. He's half fairy and half wizard and he's about the size of your average newborn baby but he talks with the strangest of accents. It was strange when he appeared in the book. Just like Ruby, I had no idea he would come, he just did, strapped to the back of a werewolf of all places. I had quite a vivid picture of this little man and I could hear him talking as if he sat right beside me.

Tiffanimelicomelea (also known as Tiffani for those unable to pronounce her real name) is introduced in DM, although she will have a larger role in The Lost Soul. She is a beautiful fairy who becomes lost and finds herself under the roof of the Elders. But I can't tell you much more without giving too much away!
Olivier Duran was briefly mentioned in Raven but appears in the sequel. Although insanely handsome, Duran is an evil vampire intent on causing havoc wherever he goes. He's also got his eyes firmly on his prize and what he wants, he usually gets.

Hopefully, you'll be intrigued enough to want to learn more about The Raven Saga. So for more information about December Moon and The Raven Saga, visit http://suzyturner.com or http://suzyturner.blogspot.com

Back to the Books Giveaway Hop!

Hello and Welcome!  The Back to the Books Giveaway Hop is hosted by I'm a Reader, Not a Writer and Buried in Books.  This giveaway will run from 12:01 September 1 through 11:59 September 7th (times are EDT).  This time I'm giving away a book that I LOVE.  I have a paperback of Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles for one lucky winner.  This book is amazing.  Here's the Goodreads blurb:
When Brittany Ellis walks into chemistry class on the first day of senior year, she has no clue that her carefully created “perfect” life is about to unravel before her eyes. She’s forced to be lab partners with Alex Fuentes, a gang member from the other side of town, and he is about to threaten everything she's worked so hard for—her flawless reputation, her relationship with her boyfriend, and the secret that her home life is anything but perfect. Alex is a bad boy and he knows it. So when he makes a bet with his friends to lure Brittany into his life, he thinks nothing of it. But soon Alex realizes Brittany is a real person with real problems, and suddenly the bet he made in arrogance turns into something much more. In a passionate story about looking beneath the surface, Simone Elkeles breaks through the stereotypes and barriers that threaten to keep Brittany and Alex apart.
