The Forester II Blog Tour Guest Post: Of Men and Triads with Blaine D. Arden

I never set out to write a triad when I started writing The Forester, way back when. Ianys was supposed to be Kelnaht's ex, pure and simple, even though Kelnaht wasn't quite over him. Less simple was Kelnaht's attraction to Taruif, the shunned Forester, since any contact between them would result in punishment. Being shunned is taken very seriously by the elves, and by Truth Seeker Kelnaht. So Kelnaht stuck to an admiring-from-a-distance approach.

But then Ianys came to him to speak on Taruif's behalf, and Kelnaht had to listen to the man he still loved confessing he had been sleeping with Taruif. So, in the course of one scene, my story had changed from a Truth Seeker desiring a shunned Forester, to both Kelnaht and his ex desiring a shunned Forester. Adding the remaining feelings between Kelnaht and Ianys to that, and it was like mission impossible cubed, or something to that effect.

It was never going to work, was it? I could never write that happy ever after with the shunning or Ianys' promise to his deceased vowed, Naia, in place. Yet, something about three of them together clicked in my head. Their dynamic made sense.

Of course, for it to work, I needed to understand the men themselves better. I had a picture of them in my head, but I'd been thinking two dimensionally, not three dimensionally... or was it four?

Ianys was the easiest to suss out. He already had room for more than one lover in his heart, after all, he'd wanted both Kelnaht and Naia—even though his promise to Naia kept him away from Kelnaht for years after Naia's death. It was only logical to assume there was room for Taruif as well. Ianys didn't mind sharing, either. He wasn't the type to sleep around for the sake of it, especially not while trying to raise his daughter. He might not even have sought out Taruif, if he hadn't caught someone else sneaking into Taruif's dwelling one night.

With Taruif, I knew there was a painful past that made him a bit wary of love—the assisted suicide that had led to his shunning—not to mention the isolation caused by his shunning. Yet, that twenty year sentence of isolation got to him, and he started needing the contact, however fleeting. Talking to the Guide, even doing that every day, just wasn't enough. Taruif didn't go looking for it, but a small number of elves managed to catch his eye for illicit encounters before he met Ianys. In fact, their meeting was supposed to be of the same nature, but Ianys kept coming back and was interested in more than just fucking... and Taruif let him in.

As for Kelnaht... Cheated on and left by Ianys (for Naia—are you keeping up?), Kelnaht understandably felt betrayed and angry for a long time. But he wasn't looking for a 'replacement', and he still went to the Solstice Circle in the hope of changing Ianys' mind—not knowing about Ianys' promise to Naia, obviously. When he managed to fall for Taruif without speaking a single word to him, he wasn't planning to act on it because of the shunning. He'd resigned himself to being alone. Of course, he had no idea Taruif was aware of Kelnaht watching him, and after a while, Taruif started watching back, even if Kelnaht didn't notice.

So there you have it, three completely different men all drawn to each other despite having plenty of reasons not to. Forming a triad is hard enough without all the extra baggage. There is trust involved, communication. And what about the dynamics? Would they all sleep together all the time? Or would they form separate relationship within the triad? Or a mix? These questions, and many more, floated through my mind as I wrote the story. And all these questions somehow answered themselves while I was writing. These men just made it easy for me.

I started out with a nearly impossible situation, one I wasn't sure I could solve or they could solve. But the more I wrote, the more I became convinced they could and would work. I knew it would be anything but easy for them, and there wouldn't be a complete solution—of course, that was before I decided to turn The Forester into a trilogy—but...

"Your path is muddy, Kelnaht, but don't think avoiding the puddles will make it easier to travel," the Guide told Kelnaht in The Forester. He also said, "There is always a way."

Wise words from a wise man. Kelnaht, Ianys, and Taruif made it through part one reasonably happy, and I'm more convinced than ever that they'll find their happy ever after as a triad... someday.

*****

The Forester II: Lost and Found – Now Available for just $3.99!

"The Guide mentioned puddles, but I envisioned lakes, deep treacherous lakes, and I was drowning."

One turn has passed, another Solstice is just around the corner, and having an illicit affair with not one but two lovers—smith Ianys and shunned Forester Taruif—is taking its toll on Truth Seeker Kelnaht.

If it isn't sneaking around to find some quality time with his lovers, it's heavy rainfall hiding traces of a missing stripling, or waiting for the elders to decide whether or not to set Taruif free.

And if that's not enough, Kelnaht fears that in gaining one lover, he might be losing another, as Ianys seems to be pulling away from them, and it looks like someone is, once again, trying to frame Taruif.

To Kiss a Killer (Banded Brothers #5) by Amber Kell

I'm kind of sad to see the series ending with this last book but I never really expected that Aden would get his own book. I thought we'd end it with Harris and that would be that but the author has decided to give Aden his own happy ending and to even spin it off into a new series. Here is the cover and blurb for To Kiss a Killer:

What would you do to protect your family? For Aden the answer is anything.

Aden Gale has always protected the boys he chose as his. Gallen Theos refuses to become another one of Aden’s projects. He might have been bespelled by his father but he was Aden’s mate and he refused to take anything less than a full partnership. If the cool-eyed killer thought he could wiggle away for Gallen’s own safety, well he had a lot to learn about the tenacity of sorcerers.

Aden has always been wandering in and out of the Banded Brothers' stories.  He shows up to protect his family and to check that they are safe.  He fills the role of father to all of them, even going so far as to size up their potential mates and threaten their lives if they don't make his boys happy.  But what about ADEN'S happiness?  We have never really gotten much of his story before now.  We knew that Carey was his biological son and that his wife had passed away but not much else.  In this book we get more of the back story and we see what it is that Aden actually does for a living.  He also gets his happily ever after with true love's kiss.  Literally.  Gallen the creepy faerie/sorcerer from Eaton's book is encased in a metal coffin in the backyard waiting for true love's kiss to break his enchantment.  Aden feels the pull toward him but it takes a dare from Carey to make him take the plunge and kiss the boy.  Gallen doesn't want to let Aden slip away from him by pretending that they should not mate for Gallen's safety but Aden soon caves to his feelings and finally lets himself have something good.  I really enjoyed this look at two characters that we previously had only seen in a certain light.  To Kiss a Killer brought them to life and made them real.  I can not wait to see where Amber Kell goes next with the characters!

You can add the Banded Brothers Series to your Goodreads by clicking here.  You can also find out more about Amber Kell and her writing by checking out her blog.  She can also be found on Twitter.  After this book, Amber Kell will be taking the series in a new direction in a spin off series; The Dragons of Seattle.  I give To Kiss a Killer 4 Fairies for a great read about reluctant mates finding their way together.

To Bite a Bear (Banded Brothers #4) by Amber Kell

I use Grammarly's plagiarism checker because no one wants to be unoriginal!

I finally bought the fourth and fifth books in Amber Kell's Banded Brothers series.  The books are painfully short but they are my quick, fun go to reads to break up my reading or to get me through a slump after reading something particularly angsty.  Here is the cover and blurb:

Sometimes you need a grand gesture to prove your love, and sometimes a bear hug will do.

Harris Bender had a crush on vampire leader Rohan, so when the alpha male requests him to paint a mural, he can only say yes. However, after a passionate encounter, Harris discovered Rohan is his mate. Is the carefree artist ready to settle down with one man even if he’s extremely hot?

Rohan had been looking for his blood bonded for centuries. One taste of the bear shifter’s blood and he knows he’s found the one. However, outside forces threaten to tear the couple apart. It will take more than a flash of fang to put them in their place.
This book felt a little ... muddled but I still greatly enjoyed it.  It was nice to finally be able to focus on Harris.  He has been in the background of every other story in the series so I enjoyed finally getting more of him.  The introduction of the vampires to the brothers' lives can only lead to further mayhem.  I really would love to see Ms. Kell make the books into actual books and not merely short stories.  They really could be that much better because the worst thing about them is how short they are.  Just when you really get a feel for the characters, it's over.  I would really like to see the books more fleshed out because the story, the world and the characters deserve it.  Harris is just so adorable.  Seriously.  You usually get bear shifters that are big, burly and scary.  Harris is big and a bit furry but he's as sweet and caring as the day is long.  He loves giving hugs and making others happy.  He loves being creative by cooking, painting, drawing and even getting his metalworking on.  He is just a phenomenal guy.  Rohan was interesting but I felt like we needed more about and from him.  Rohan could have been a great character but he fell kind of flat.  All in all though, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to rereading it soon.

You can add the Banded Brothers Series to your Goodreads by clicking here.  You can also find out more about Amber Kell and her writing by checking out her blog.  She can also be found on Twitter.  The fifth book is already out (I will be reviewing it tomorrow) and will be taking the series in a new direction in a spin off series; The Dragons of Seattle.  I give To Bite a Bear 4 Fairies for an adorable story about a sweet bear and the vampire that loves him.

The Girl with the Iron Touch (Steampunk Chronicles #3) by Kady Cross

I love the Steampunk Chronicles by Kady Cross so I was super excited to get a copy of The Girl with the Iron Touch from Harlequin TEEN for review through NetGalley!  Here is the cover and Goodreads blurb:

In 1897 London, something not quite human is about to awaken

When mechanical genius Emily is kidnapped by rogue automatons, Finley Jayne and her fellow misfits fear the worst. What's left of their archenemy, The Machinist, hungers to be resurrected, and Emily must transplant his consciousness into one of his automatons—or forfeit her friends' lives.

With Griffin being mysteriously tormented by the Aether, the young duke's sanity is close to the breaking point. Seeking help, Finley turns to Jack Dandy, but trusting the master criminal is as dangerous as controlling her dark side. When Jack kisses her, Finley must finally confront her true feelings for him...and for Griffin.

Meanwhile, Sam is searching everywhere for Emily, from Whitechapel's desolate alleyways to Mayfair's elegant mansions. He would walk into hell for her, but the choice she must make will test them more than they could imagine.

To save those she cares about, Emily must confront The Machinist's ultimate creation—an automaton more human than machine. And if she's to have any chance at triumphing, she must summon a strength even she doesn't know she has....
I loved reading this newest installment in this series!  It was great to see the focus on Emily and her coming into her own.  She's so small and sweet that it's easy to overlook how powerful and strong she is.  Emily has been hurt before and we get to see more about that.  That pain caused her to want to move forward and stand on her own two feet instead of hiding from the world and the possibility of being hurt again.  I love that about her.  She's just such a great character.  I love her!  Overall, this book has some great moments of resolution for some of the romantic tension between the residents of Greythorne.  Jack Dandy makes himself known as well, of course.  This book is obviously not the end of the series- it may just be heating up.  I can't wait to see what comes next!  There will be a novella released on July 1 that will focus on Jack Dandy so be sure to check that out.  You can pre-order it on Amazon now.

You can click here to find The Girl with the Iron Touch on Goodreads.  You can also click here to find the rest of the series on Goodreads.  Kady Cross can be found on her website and on Twitter.  There is also a Kady Cross fan page on Facebook.  Click here to find The Girl with the Iron Touch on Amazon.  I give The Girl with the Iron Touch 5 Fairies for an awesome book that I tore through in one night.

I am giving away one paperback copy of any of the Steampunk Chronicles books.  You must be 13 years or older to enter and you must be able to receive books from the Book Depository.

BIR 2013: The Goddess Inheritance (The Goddess Test #3) by Aimee Carter

I love the Goddess Hunt series by Aimee Carter!  It has been on my Best of the Year lists for the last two years.  I even got to meet Aimee Carter in New York during BEA 2012 and she REMEMBERED me from Best I've Read 2011!  (Best thing ever!)  I was honored to win a signed ARC of The Goddess Inheritance.  Here is the cover and the Goodreads blurb:

Love or life.
Henry or their child.
The end of her family or the end of the world.
Kate must choose.

During nine months of captivity, Kate Winters has survived a jealous goddess, a vengeful Titan and a pregnancy she never asked for. Now the Queen of the Gods wants her unborn child, and Kate can't stop her--until Cronus offers a deal.

In exchange for her loyalty and devotion, the King of the Titans will spare humanity and let Kate keep her child. Yet even if Kate agrees, he'll destroy Henry, her mother and the rest of the council. And if she refuses, Cronus will tear the world apart until every last god and mortal is dead.

With the fate of everyone she loves resting on her shoulders, Kate must do the impossible: find a way to defeat the most powerful being in existence, even if it costs her everything.

Even if it costs her eternity.

I'm sad to see the Goddess Test series end.  Henry and Kate have been through so much together and I have enjoyed following along.  This series has been an amazing Greek/Roman pantheon inspired romance.  There is so much involved in the story that you can't help but see the hard work and time that Aimee Carter has put into creating it.  Henry may be the god of the underworld, but there is no way that you won't love him.  Hades has always been cast in a bad light but Henry makes us see how human Hades really is.  He has lost so much and been so alone.  Kate is such a great character as well.  She is a normal girl who overcomes great adversity and becomes a great woman.  She deals with being treated as if she can not help.  I love Kate.  This third book really examines what we are willing to do to protect the ones we love and the blurred lines of blame.  Who is really at fault?  Can you blame someone for making a hard choice to save one person and not another?  What makes a parent?  There are so many thought provoking things going on in this one under all of the action as the Council fights Cronus and Calliope.  I loved this book and I hope you will too.

You can find the Goddess Test Series on Goodreads here.  You can also find out more about Aimee Carter and her upcoming new series on her website, her blog, and on Twitter.  You can also click here to check out my interview with Aimee Carter for BIR 2011.  I give this finale to the Goddess Test series 5 Fairies for a beautiful ending to a beloved series.

I'm giving away one copy of any book from the Goddess Test Series in paperback.  You must be 13 years or older and you must be able to receive books from the Book Depository.

Rebels

The world is on fire. From the ashes like a phoenix rises a new America, one that will save it all. Under one condition; absolute and complete surrender.
The world complies without question. Those who don’t are destroyed. It is in this world, John is born. His very name is treason.
If the New America, now known to everyone as the State, knew what John was, they’d kill him, but instead they give him a gift.

Praise for Rebels

John has a lot of potential (especially for someone so young) in that he sees the flaws in this society. He wants to be like George Washington and knows a lot about the manner in which a government should be run... Highly recommended. ~Amazon Review

Excerpt
My mother is a superior cook and gardener, she can make anything grow and anything taste good, she is a genius. Because of that, I had better nutrition and so this gave me a leg up when it came to endurance. It has been many years since the State has taken over and very few people remember even how to grow their own gardens and what nutritional value means, that’s obvious based on what the school now defines as lunch. Then there is the edge that my father gave me, being a mixed martial artist. His father had been a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and had created his own unique style called Reality Based Street Fighting. He had been relentless in training my father and, in turn, my father had been relentless in training me. At first, I thought this to be child abuse but as I grew older and my skills became better, I realized that this training may save my life one day.

How We Write Together
Much like building a house Judith creates the foundation and the actual structure of the book allowing Scott to then go in and finish the interior and details that makes up the remainder of the story. In many ways Judith is the architect/contractor and Scott is the interior designer.
Surprisingly we understand what the other is thinking when we write. Each of our parts are much like a puzzle, at first the picture is unclear but as we put in the pieces of the puzzle the story begins to unfold and comes to life. We each bring in a unique perspective that allows the story to grow and bring the characters to life.
One great example of how great we work together in Rebels, Judith wrote in detail about what the Young Army was but never gave a perspective of what they could do. Scott was able to bring to life the fighting scenes in this area showing the capacity of these young men and why the State would have such an interest in the Young Army. It's like that through the entire book.
When Scott gets done Judith go over the book again to make sure that it all makes sense. Then Scott goes over it one more time. Because Judith and Scott are such close friends working on the books is more fun than work. It allows us to use each other perspective and make something even better.

Majra by J. Simon Book Blast

“In distant Sa'bahr, divinely inspired lunatics spend their lives inscribing every story ever told upon the backs of giant tortoises. The tortoises spend their lives weeping, for they cannot read the wondrous tales written upon their own backs...”

Aris has managed to live a quiet life, even in a stark desert land of glorious tales and beautiful lies, crazed artists and mad hermits. So what if he has a knack for tales? A mere messenger can't change the world. Mighty great works he'll leave to mighty great men.

Now the soldiers of Majra have come to
 pacify his “savage” people.

Few dare stand against them. Certainly Aris never meant to. Taking work with the inavders was a way to help his family, not gain insights into the alien ways of their singular truth.

Beset by beguiling widows and vengeful plutocrats, firebrand Sheyks and
sword-tongued maidens, the choices Aris faces could save his land—or break it.

J Simon is a small blue bird who has been published in magazines and anthologies ranging from Baen's Universe to Writers of the Future.

This surely indicates a lapse by the Guardians of Taste, and inquiries are being made.

There is also a very small chance that nuclear test fallout has transformed J Simon into a gigantic nuclear starfish poised to attack Tokyo, but these reports have yet to be confirmed.
